Ice and Snow

About the Roads Division

The Roads Division oversees approximately 272 kilometres of maintained public roads; 95 km paved and 177 gravel . There are many concession roads which may be legally open but not improved or maintained. Maintenance activities in summer include grading, re-graveling, dust control, roadside mowing, tree trimming, brush cleanup, road sign installation/maintenance, construction projects, bridge work, pavement patching and more. Winter activities include snow plowing, sanding/salting, ice blading of gravel roads, snow removal in town, sidewalk plowing, etc.

These activities are carried out by personnel from vehicle depots in Kemptville and Oxford Mills. The fleet consists of five large trucks, three graders, backhoe, loader, three 4X4 plows, two sidewalk machines and one pick-up for patrolling/maintenance. Road mowing is done with a leased tractor and municipally - owned mower and takes place during July of each year.

The Roads Division also oversees the installation of entrances onto public Municipal roads. Entrance permits are available at the Public Works Office. New entrances on streets in unassumed subdivisions or private (cottage) roads are installed by the owner or developer. All entrances on Municipal roads are done by the roads crew. Fee schedules for these permits are set by bylaw.

Fees for 911 signs are also applied. The numbers are assigned by the Building Division and the actual signs are made up and installed by the Roads Division.
