About our speakers:

Dr. Michael Cheng, Child Psychiatrist, CHEO, Associate Professor, uOttawa

Dr. Michael Cheng is a psychiatrist at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario; an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Ottawa, and the co-founder of eMentalHealth.ca, which provides information to families and professionals about mental health and wellness.  

He helps families by reconnecting them to that which gives purpose, belonging, hope and meaning.

He has a special interest in rediscovering strategies that traditional societies and parents have used for millennia.

As a post-pandemic parent of 2 school-aged children, Michael understands first-hand the challenges of raising kids in modern society.

Dr. Kim Hellemans, Assistant Professor in Neuroscience, Associate Dean of Science, Carleton U

Dr. Kim Hellemans is an Assistant Professor in Neuroscience and Associate Dean of Science at Carleton University. She has received several prestigious teaching awards that recognize her passion and dedication to university teaching, including the Provost’s Fellowship in Teaching Award and, most recently, the OCUFA Provincial Teaching Award.

Her current research explores how early-life trauma and cannabis use relate to mental health and academic outcomes among university students.

She is passionate about knowledge translation and knowledge mobilization and has created several freely available animations on the topic of neuroscience, addiction, and stigma.

She is also the co-host of the award-winning podcast “Minding the Brain”.
