The Planning & Development department is responsible to assist residents, developers and others in planning, designing and building a healthy community. The department is made up of three divisions: Building, Economic Development and Planning.
The Director of Planning & Development oversees a staff of planners, economic development officers and building officials.
The Building Division oversees building within the Municipality including issuing building permits, carrying out inspections and providing information on building requirements.

The Planning division is responsible for all aspects of land use planning including land use policies and development application reviews and approvals. Some of the common issues the division addresses are Official Plans, Zoning By-Laws, severances, subdivision developments, minor variances and site plan control.
The Planning division is also responsible for heritage in North Grenville and provides support to the Heritage Advisory Committee. The division maintains and monitors an inventory of over 1,000 heritage properties in the Municipality, which could be threatened by demolition or development. Some of the other projects which the division has been actively involved with include the creation of Walking Tours as well as the research and development of articles on various aspects of the community’s history.
