The safety and well-being of our residents is of prime importance to both the NGPSB and OPP and we were encouraged to see that over 96% of respondents indicated they felt safe in North Grenville. The results of the survey also identify opportunities for further improvement.
“This survey provides important insight to Council into how North Grenville residents perceive policing in the community,” said Mayor Nancy Peckford.
This survey will be one of the sources used to help the NGPSB and the Grenville OPP Detachment Commander establish local priorities that can be incorporated into the Grenville OPP Detachment Action Plan.
Respondents rated the importance of a wide range of issues on a scale of 1 to 5, with “1” meaning “Very Low Priority” and, “5” meaning “Very High Priority”. For all respondents, the average priority scores for “high” (4) to “very high” priorities (5) were determined for the following issues: sexual assault (4.53), impaired driving (4.42), physical attack or assault (4.21), elder abuse (4.16), domestic violence (4.16) and break-ins to homes (4.04).
“Given that Victim Services of Leeds and Grenville is telling us that residents in North Grenville need more support than Victim Services can adequately provide, we are speaking with the province about how we can increase their capacity and presence in our community,” added Mayor Peckford.
Almost one quarter (23.7%) of respondents provided written comments with the top three themes being, safety (traffic, personal, and general), identification of traffic problems (e.g., speeding, unsafe roundabouts, distracted driving and unsafe motorist behaviour) and suggestions for change in police services (e.g., proactive policing, more presentations to community groups).
When viewing the data it should be noted that residents self-selected to participate in this survey. While the survey results are a significant data source for the NGPSB and OPP, the results can only be associated with this respondent group and not generalized to the population of North Grenville.
