Municipality of North Grenville Closes Playgrounds and Sports Fields

March 26, 2020

NORTH GRENVILLE - Playgrounds and sports fields in North Grenville are now closed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

“In an effort to ensure the safety of our residents and promote social distancing, we have made the decision to close playgrounds and sports fields in the municipality,” said Mayor Nancy Peckford.

Playground maintenance does not follow the same protocols as indoor equipment or facilities. Consequently, the Parks and Recreation Department cannot maintain the same level of sanitization.

In addition to the playgrounds, the closure also includes the ball diamonds, tennis courts and soccer fields throughout the municipality. It also applies to the skate park at Riverside Park.

“My Council colleagues and I understand this is a challenging and uncertain time for families, but the reality is that play equipment in our municipal parks must be declared off limits for the present time,” added Peckford.

On March 25, Mayor Peckford declared a local state of emergency for the Municipality of North Grenville.

As such, residents in North Grenville are being urged to always practice social distancing, which means staying at least two metres away from other people, staying away from group gatherings, staying at home as much as possible, and limiting the number of trips you make in the community.

"You don't need to social distance from nature, just people. That's why we're leaving our trails open. It is important for people to get outside and there should be plenty of space for you to have that physical distancing," highlighted Councillor Doreen O’Sullivan, Liaison for Parks and Recreation.

Anyone experiencing symptoms of the Coronavirus should also self-isolate and call their primary caregiver or Ontario Telehealth at 1-866-797-0000 for information.
