Statement by Mayor Nancy Peckford for Paramedics Services Week

May 26, 2021

NORTH GRENVILLE, ON - Mayor Nancy Peckford issued the following statement in honour of Paramedics Service Week, May 23 – 29, 2021:

This year, more than ever, North Grenville’s Municipal Council would like to give thanks to all frontline paramedics for their service and dedication. In particular, we would like to recognize members of the Leeds Grenville Paramedic Service.

The Service is responsible for providing pre-hospital, and emergency medical care to the more than 150,000 residents of the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville, including Gananoque, Brockville, Westport and North Grenville - covering a geographic area of over 3,350 square kilometres.

The Leeds Grenville Paramedic Service has six permanent stations located throughout Leeds and Grenville, including Kemptville. All six are staffed 24 hours a day and - during peak times - there are nine vehicles staffed, providing effective emergency coverage.

Paramedics have played a special role during this pandemic by offering a series of pop-up testing and vaccine sites in a variety of communities throughout the United Counties. Further, Leeds Grenville Paramedics have operated a mobile vaccination unit for those who are unable to leave their homes due to health issues.

The theme for Paramedic Services Week 2021 is “Paramedic as Educator – Citizen Ready” and demonstrates the important role that paramedics play in our communities, both rural and urban.

As healthcare professionals, paramedics are often incorporating the best research into their practices, but the public doesn’t always know why. In an effort to help the public understand why simple steps taken by loved ones or bystanders can make a difference in many emergencies prior to help arriving, the Paramedic Chiefs of Canada have developed a package of material building on existing education and incorporating new trending treatments for the public to be citizen ready.

Please join me and my Council colleagues this week, as we recognize the incredibly hard work and expertise paramedics bring 24/7 to keeping members of our community safe and healthy.
