Statement by Mayor Nancy Peckford on the on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities

December 3, 2021

NORTH GRENVILLE, ON - Mayor Nancy Peckford issued the following statement on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities:

“Today, on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, members of Council join others from across the country to highlight the accomplishments and promote the rights and well-being of people with disabilities, and celebrate the contributions they make in our communities.

From our family and friends, to our neighbours and colleagues, millions of Canadians experience a disability at some point in their lifetimes – many of which are invisible.

The COVID-19 pandemic has deepened pre-existing inequalities – from health care, to education and employment. Let us work together to build a more inclusive post-pandemic world. When communities and businesses are more accessible, everyone benefits.

On this day and everyday, we recognize the many challenges persons with disabilities confront in navigating the world, and we commit to identifying, removing, and preventing barriers that still exist.

On behalf of the Municipality of North Grenville, I would like to extend our appreciation to our community partners – including North Grenville Community Living staff, clients and families as well as individuals serving on the Municipal Accessibility Advisory Committee - who are advancing our collective efforts to be more inclusive and accessible for all.

I invite residents to learn more about how we can all work to create a more inclusive community. Together, we can remove and prevent barriers to accessibility.”
