North Grenville’s Council Declares February 13 Wear Red Day

NORTH GRENVILLE, ON – North Grenville’s Council has declared February 13, 2022, Wear Red Day for the Municipality of North Grenville.

Wear Red Canada Day is celebrated annually across Canada on February 13th to raise awareness about women's cardiovascular health.

“Council is proud to endorse Wear Red Day and help amplify the message of women’s cardiovascular health. This day serves as a reminder for all of us to be proactive in our heart health and wellness,” said Mayor Nancy Peckford.

"It is critical that everyone understand that the signs of a heart attack or cardiac distress in women can be dramatically different - and is not always defined by a sudden onset of chest acute pain,” added Mayor Peckford.

"Symptoms of a heart attack can differ between genders. Women are more likely to report pain in the middle or upper back, neck, or jaw; shortness of breath; nausea or vomiting; indigestion; loss of appetite; weakness or fatigue; cough; dizziness; and palpitations. Learn the symptoms and don't ignore them," highlighted Councillor Doreen O’Sullivan, a registered nurse with the Ottawa Hospital.

Heart disease is the leading cause of preventable death in Canadian women. According to the Canadian Women's Heart Health Alliance, an organization of volunteer health professionals and patients working hard to improve women's heart health, cardiovascular diseases affect 1 out of 3 women, yet all too often, women are under-studied, under-diagnosed and under-treated when it comes to their cardiovascular health.

“The good news is heart disease is largely preventable and there are many ways we can help reduce the risk, including being active, eating healthy foods, managing stress, and limiting alcohol and tobacco,” added Councillor O’Sullivan. “Be sure to get regular checkups and test for blood pressure and cholesterol.”

The ultimate goal of this awareness campaign is improving the heart health of women in Canada.
