Statement by Mayor Nancy Peckford on International Women’s Day

March 8, 2022

NORTH GRENVILLE, ON - Mayor Nancy Peckford issued the following statement on International Women’s Day:

On behalf of myself and Council, we join with communities across Canada, and around the world, to celebrate International Women’s Day 2022 – a time to mark the social, cultural and political achievements of women.

The theme for International Women’s Day 2022 is #BreakTheBias. We invite you to imagine a world where biases, stereotypes and discrimination do not persist – and a world where difference is valued and celebrated.

Diversity and equity are important values for Council, and the Municipality is working to make our workplace and community more inclusive, safer and more compassionate.

With the appointment of North Grenville’s newest Councillor, Ms. Debbie Wilson (who fills the vacancy after the departure of former Deputy Mayor McManaman), it tips the balance for women. North Grenville is one of just a few Municipal Councils in the country with more than 75 percent women!

As a mother of two daughters and one son, I see this day as a chance to reflect on how we can ensure that gender is not a barrier for any person. I invite you to reach out to some of the incredibly bright, strong and fierce women who help make up the fabric of our vibrant community and tell them how much you appreciate their efforts.

As we begin to rebuild and recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, there is no doubt that it’s important to work together as a community and country so people, no matter their gender, family status or life stage are supported and free to realize their full potential.

No matter who you are, let us pave the way for our girls to see that glass ceilings can continue to be shattered, and for our boys and men to not be constrained by rigid stereotypes. Ultimately, may we all feel empowered to choose our own paths.

Happy International Women’s Day, North Grenville.
