Mayor Peckford offered the following statement on the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II:
On behalf of myself, my Council colleagues, and the Municipality of North Grenville, I offer my deepest condolences to the Royal Family on the loss of Her Majesty the Queen who passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at the age of 96.
Her Majesty vowed to devote her life to the service of the Commonwealth and its people with a reign that spanned many decades. She was the longest reigning monarch who became a much loved and respected figure across the world.
This past summer, North Grenville welcomed Her Honour the Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario for an official visit and flag raising ceremony to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, marking 70 years of service to the people of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth.
Let us remember Queen Elizabeth II as a woman of honour, a wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Our thoughts are with members of the Royal Family, all citizens of the United Kingdome and the countries of the Commonwealth during this period of mourning and significant loss.
Flags at the Municipal Centre have been lowered to half-mast in honour of the Queen’s legacy and public service to the people of Great Britain.
Residents are invited to sign the book of condolences, which has been set up in the lobby of the North Grenville Municipal Centre.
While we continue to mourn the passing of Canada’s longest-reigning sovereign, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, we look to the future with the proclamation of the accession of His Majesty King Charles III who will continue to exercise the constitutional responsibilities in a way that will provide stability to Canadian institutions and the Commonwealth at large.
