Statement by Mayor Nancy Peckford on National Day of Mourning

NORTH GRENVILLE – Mayor Nancy Peckford issued the following statement to mark the National Day of Mourning on April 28, 2022:

Today marks the National Day of Mourning, a day in Canada dedicated to remembering those who have lost their lives or suffered injury due to a work-related tragedy. We also honour the many families and friends who have been deeply affected by these tragedies.

Consequently, the Municipality of North Grenville’s flags will be flown at half-mast.

It is a day where, collectively, we renew our commitment to improving health and safety in workplaces throughout the country, and to preventing further injuries, illnesses and deaths.

The pandemic in particular, has exacerbated our health-care system and has taken a tremendous toll on the health and well-being of front-line health-care workers, from burnout to PTSD and more.

This is particularly true of our health care staff, emergency responders, retirement and nursing home employees, personal support workers, daycare workers, grocery store and postal clerks, trucking personnel and so many other employees on the job each and every day.

In North Grenville, in addition to remembering those lost and injured, the day is also an opportunity to remind ourselves and other employers throughout the community to work together - employees and employers - across all sectors to ensure a safe and accommodating workplace.

We ask that you observe a moment of silence at 11:00 am, and take the opportunity to honour all the workers we have lost or who have suffered illness at work.

Canada was the first nation to recognize the Day of Mourning and since 1984, and acknowledgement of the day has spread to many countries and is now observed throughout the world.
