Just a short drive from Ottawa, there’s a peaceful countryside escape that’s perfect for travellers craving fresh air, scenic beauty, and small‑town charm. Whether you're driving the route or pack your bike, this nature itinierary has something for all. Follow 44 — a 27‑kilometre scenic route starting at Rideau River Provincial Park, winding through historic Downtown Kemptville, and ending in the quaint village of Spencerville that invites you to slow down and soak it all in.

Start the day at Rideau River Provincial Park, where the waterfront trail and sandy beach offer a refreshing morning stroll. The calm of the river and forested paths sets the tone for a day of slow exploration. Afterward, stop at The Long Reach for breakfast. This quaint café embodies country charm, with homemade sourdough and comforting breakfast options that feel authentically local.

Cyclist & runners note: Paved multi-use pathway on west side of 44 connects into Downtown Kemptville sidewalks. For daytime parking the North Grenville Municipal Centre is reccomended.

For Coffee Lovers & Sunrise Seekers

Bubba and Bugs Café – Ease into the day with locally roasted coffee and fresh, house-made treats at this LGBTQ+ owned café and community hub. Its friendly atmosphere and local flavours set the perfect tone for your weekend.

Ferguson Forest – Anniversary Park Dock – Launch a kayak directly from the dock or paddle upstream along the calm Rideau River. It’s a quiet, scenic route surrounded by forest and birdsong. Ideal for greeting the sunrise before the day begins.

Mid-day Adventure in Historic Downtown Kemptville + Lunch

Head into downtown Kemptville for a mix of local shopping and dining. Depending on your outlook for the day it's a great spot to walk or bike around to learn about the historic buildings and early settlers.

For a relaxed lunch, Goldwyn's impresses with elevated rustic fare, great selection of sharables and attentive service. You didn't hear it from us... but the Brussels sprouts come highly recommended.

For lighter bites or a bakery experience, The Crusty Baker offers old-British–style breads and rustic sandwiches, perfect for a picnic or takeaway as the journey continues.

Before leaving the Downtown core, a stop into Valley Sports may be of interest especially if you're trading out your car for bikes. It's the last stop on the route for tune ups, patch kits and chain lube. Cyclist note: From here on out its paved and gravel shoulders.

For the Family Adventurers on Bikes

The reduced cycling infrastructure heading out of town is less ideal for young or inexperienced cyclists.

We recommend extending out your afternoon in Downtown Kemptville in Riverside Park. Through the warmer months the Pool and Splash Pad are great spots to cool down. The playground, BMX Track, baseball diamond, and tennis courts also add to the fun.

Family friendly restos include Salamanders, and Hyde Smokehouse.

Afternoon Countryside Exploration

Leaving town, slow down and explore the rural hamlets along the route. During tulip season you'll stumble upon Wildling Acres — a mom & son owned tulip and wildflower farm that is worth a drop in.

Heading further down 44, Countryside Antiques provides a leisurely browse of treasures from around the world, while Green Gables Vines offers wine tastings and vineyard tours for those seeking a taste of local terroir.

Nature enthusiasts can detour slightly to Limerick Forest - Cabin Trail for an hour-long loop through woodland trails. Limerick is a great spot for cyclists who want to push themselves for a challenge. These trails are shared with motorized vehicles so for those with young kids a drive back up to the Limerick Interpretive Centre is best suited.

Spencerville like a Local

Before wrapping up the afternoon, visit Monday Nutrition for health foods, protein, vegan and gluten-free baked goods, and smoothies. In the summer months find pop up farm stands here for organic veggies, fresh breads, and other local goodies.

Nearby you'll find Spencercity Bar & Grill where you'll encounter Joe and his hilarious team serving up Spencerville's own brews and a casual comfort meal.

Cyclist Note: The Village Pantry is your go to for an energy drink and a sugar rush with their widely loved Cinnamon Buns to fuel up before trekking back.
