Our area is part of the Crawford Purchase of 1783. In return for the land, “all the families belonging to them shall be clothed and that those that have not fusees [flintlock muskets] shall receive new ones, some powder and ball for their winter hunting, as much coarse red cloth as will make about a dozen coats and as many laced hats.”

Treaties and purchases should be considered in the context that the signatories did not have authority to sell the land. These exchange were done outside of a nation-to-nation relationship.

To the west, The Treaty Land Sharing Network is a group of farmers, ranchers, and other landholders who have come together to begin the crucial work of honouring Treaties. In the spirit of sharing the land, they welcome First Nations and Métis people to access the land that they farm to practice their way of life.
