Responsibilities:
Corporate Strategic Initiatives (40%)
The position will:
- Work closely with the Manager of Communications to develop the Municipality's Corporate Communications Framework and coordinate a program for the development of an integrated corporate and departmental business plan.
- Provide strategic corporate communications to senior leaders, staff, Council, and the public.
- Provide opportunities for transparent community dialogue and engagement on key issues.
- Coordinate and participate in the development of corporate wide communications policies, procedures and training in relation to the vision, mission, values, goals and objectives as determined by the strategic planning process.
- Develop an integrated communications and multimedia strategy to maximize community engagement.
- Lead the design, development, execution and coordination of innovative marketing and promotional campaigns utilizing various media, including news releases, print, photography, radio and digital.
- Develop and oversee integrated communication programs designed to meet the needs of all departments and address critical issues by utilizing effective strategies, techniques and appropriate tactics to encourage community engagement.
Media and Social Media Communications (40%)
The position will:
- Support Corporate Services, along with the Mayor and Council on media relations and special initiatives/events as directed by the Manager of Communications.
- Prepare written materials including press releases, weekly newspaper updates, Q&A’s and media standby statements on issues, as required.
- Be responsible for content and ongoing updates for Municipal website and social media.
- Develop monthly departmental communication messaging for social media.
- Analyze, track and report on media trends related to municipal operations.
- Assist departments on communication best practices to ensure that all interactions (internal and external) are accessible, inclusive, timely, transparent and effective.
- Assist in the provision of general information to the public and media to keep residents apprised of events happening within the municipality, promoting opportunities for residents to participate and/or submit feedback.
- Ensure all outputs are clear, informative, consistent, professional, and accessible and presented in plain language.
Administrative (20%)
The position will:
- Provide administrative support for corporate leaders in relation to special initiatives.
- Provide support for Mayor and Council at special events, as coordinated through the Manager of Communications.
- Provide administrative, technical and logistical support to all departments; prepare, review and distribute documents, reports and presentation material.
- Ensure compliance with corporate policies and procedures including the preparation, editing and submission of Council and Committee Reports.
- Support team, programs, new initiatives, and perform other duties as assigned including acting as a back-up for team members.
Education/Specialized Training/Skills:
Essential (minimum) Qualifications:
- Post-secondary diploma/degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism and/or equivalent.
- Demonstrated efficiency in all Microsoft suite of office products.
Asset (preferred) Qualifications:
- Project management and event coordination
Work Experience:
Essential (minimum) Qualifications:
- Two (2) to four (4) years of communications experience is required.
Asset (preferred) Qualifications:
- Demonstrated experience creating, planning and executing tactical communications and social media plans with a proven track record of creativity and innovative thinking, flexibility and political sensitivity and acuity.
- Demonstrated tact and discretion when dealing with confidential information.
- Communications experience in a public sector environment.
- Demonstrated knowledge of municipal communication, theory, methods, techniques and practices.
- Strong research, editorial, copywriting and proof-reading skills; excellent attention to detail; ability to check documents for accuracy and communicate detailed changes.
- Well-developed media and communications skills - proven ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Well-developed interpersonal skills - proven ability to communicate effectively, establish credibility and build relationships at all levels including senior management, elected officials and the public.
- Exceptional organizational and time management skills and the ability to work effectively in a dynamic fast-paced organization with multiple competing priorities under tight deadlines.
- Strong knowledge of social media platforms and proven ability to create and manage social media marketing campaigns.
- Ability to think and act strategically in a political and community service environment, and to foster and contribute to a positive and productive work environment.
- Exceptional customer service experience and organizational skills.
Decision Making
The position is responsible for providing timely, accurate information to the Manager of Communications and for responding to the decisions and directions generated by same.
Supervision:
No direct reports.
Working Conditions:
- Work is conducted in an office environment, ability to sit or stand, often in front of a computer monitor, for long periods of time.
- Position required to monitor municipal social media sites evenings & weekends, when required.
- Attend meetings, and training, including some travel outside of the Municipality for meetings, conferences and training as required.
Compensation:
- The salary range for this position is $37.52/hr. - $46.89/hr.
