Road safety is a shared responsibility. Whether you drive a car, ride a bicycle, walk, or operate a commercial vehicle, it’s vital to understand how trucks behave and how to stay out of their blind spots.
Trucks have a different mirror system than cars. While we can see most of our surroundings in our cars, truck drivers have limited vision with their mirrors, where they are unable to see some zones around the truck, as shown above.
We all can help each other on the road by following the safety rules and understanding the limitations that some vehicles have.
- Trucks have no a rear view mirror like cars, and that prevents truck drivers from seeing what is directly behind their truck
- Car drivers need to keep a large distance when they drive behind a truck
- Make sure that the truck driver sees your car if you need to overtake it
- Cyclists need to leave enough space for a truck when it turns
Members of the Blind Spot Awareness Project value safety and strive to make it an integral part of their operations. Safe on-road behaviours not only benefit the driver, but also all of those living in the communities they serve.
