Statement by Mayor Nancy Peckford on International Day of the Girl

Mayor Peckford made the following statement for International Day of the Girl:

October 11 is International Day of the Girl as declared by the United Nations, a day dedicated to celebrating the power of girls and highlighting the barriers many girls face.

The theme for this year is: “Invest in Girls’ Rights: Our Leadership, Our Well-being”, a powerful call to action that underscores the critical importance of empowering girls and recognizing their inherent leadership potential. This resonates deeply, serving as a reminder of the transformative impact of investing in girls’ rights and well-being.

We know that across Canada and around the world, girls continue to make a positive impact in their communities. Yet while there has been incredible progress, we know that substantial challenges remain.

As proclaimed by Council earlier this month, girls have the right to be their true authentic selves and express themselves with originality and enthusiasm.

On this International Day of the Girl, let us encourage girls to take risks and have the confidence in themselves to lead a life in full enjoyment of their rights, free of violence and discrimination, as equal and strong leaders in our community.
