Mayor and Council with local youth deputized as Mayor and Deputy Mayor for the Day

Two Local Youth Won North Grenville’s Mayor for a Day Contest

North Grenville, ON - As part of Local Government Week, the Municipality hosted two local youth for its first ever Mayor for a Day Contest on Wednesday, October 18, 2023.

The day began with a swearing-in ceremony, where Ben McKenna and Miles Dockendorff were deputized as Mayor and Deputy Mayor, followed by a flag raising ceremony to mark Local Government Week. Ben and Miles spent the day with Mayor and Council, where they met members of the Senior Management Team and departmental staff, attended meetings, toured facilities, and addressed the media.

“We were thrilled to welcome two youth leaders for the day to learn more about the inner workings of municipal government and express their vision for North Grenville’s future. It was an honour to spend the day with them and I hope they continue to be involved in our community,” emphasized Mayor Peckford.

Mayor Ben McKenna

Ben McKenna is a grade nine student at St. Michael Catholic High School in Kemptville.

“My dream for North Grenville is a multi-purpose indoor recreational facility where everyone can exercise, play, and socialize all year round,” said Mayor Ben.

Deputy Mayor Miles Dockendorff

Miles Dockendorff is in grade nine living in Kemptville. He is a former student at École élémentaire et secondaire publique Rivière-Rideau.

“We need to work on creating more opportunities for Francophone students in North Grenville and improving ways of protecting our unique natural environment,” added Deputy Mayor Miles.

Mayor for a Day Contest

The Mayor’s Youth Advisory Committee, in collaboration with the Municipality of North Grenville, launched the first ever Mayor for a Day Contest as an opportunity for the youth to learn more about municipal politics and civic issues.

The contest will occur each year during Ontario’s Local Government Week (third week in October), to increase public and youth awareness of the important role local governments play in our communities.
