Watershed Conditions - Water Safety

October 15, 2026

South Nation Conservation (SNC) is issuing a Water Safety Statement for the South Nation River Watershed due to elevated water levels and flows and additional rainfall forecasted for the region, with particular concern for the headwaters of the South Nation River and the North Branch of the South Nation River.

Weather Forecast: Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) forecasts up to 35 mm of rainfall by the end of Friday, October 16.

Environmental Conditions: Rainfall received earlier this week has resulted in elevated water levels and flows. Ground conditions are currently saturated and have limited capacity for infiltration. Additional rainfall will contribute to increased runoff, causing rivers and streams to rise and flow faster.

Risks: All rivers and streams across the jurisdiction will experience elevated water levels and faster flows with slippery or unstable banks. These conditions are expected to be more noticeable in the headwaters of the South Nation River and along the North Branch of the South Nation River near North Grenville and North Dundas.

ACTION: Residents are advised to stay away from rivers, streams, and low-lying areas. Parents are encouraged to keep children and pets away from waterways.
Residents in flood-prone areas should remain alert to changing conditions and take precautions to protect their property, including:

  • Sump pump is clear, in good working condition and has a backwater valve on it.
  • Easy access to portable backup generator and pump.
  • Downspouts are clear and the outlet is at least 3 m from the dwelling.
  • Driveway culverts are clear of debris and drain well.
  • Items that might float away as flows increase are secured.

Duration: This water safety statement is in effect until October 20th, 2026 at 5 PM or until an update has been issued.

SNC monitors the water levels and weather forecasts as part of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Program. Updates are provided as conditions change.
