On behalf of Council and the Municipality of North Grenville, I extend our deepest condolences to the families, friends, and the broader Filipino community affected by the devastating events at the Lapu Lapu Day festival in Vancouver.
The senseless act that claimed 11 lives and injured many more has left our nation in mourning.
Far too often, we find ourselves affected by news of mass violence abroad — sometimes with the naïve belief that such horrors could never happen here. This tragedy is a stark reminder that even in one of the safest countries in the world, we are not immune to such plainly terrible acts.
In solidarity and remembrance, flags have been lowered at all municipal buildings. This gesture reflects our collective grief and our commitment to stand with the Filipino community during this profoundly difficult time.
We recognize the significant contributions of the Filipino-Canadian community to the cultural fabric of our nation. Their resilience and unity in the face of tragedy are truly inspiring.
As we reflect on this heartbreaking event, let us reaffirm our commitment to fostering inclusive, safe, and compassionate communities.
Our thoughts are with all those affected by this senseless tragedy.
Flags will remain lowered at the Municipality of North Grenville through Wednesday, April 30.
Mayor Nancy Peckford
